Science Curriculum

Who can I talk to about learning in Science?

You can talk to your child's class teacher or our Science Lead Mr Hughes

Our Vision for Science:

The Science curriculum at Studley Church of England Academy will ensure that all children leave our school with a love, understanding and a deep body of knowledge for Science and how this impacts on the world in which we live. We believe Science is essential to ensure we develop future generations who can contribute fully to society.

Our curriculum is sequenced coherently so children will have the confidence and motivation to continue to further develop their skills into the next stage of their education and life experiences. Children have weekly lessons in Science throughout Key Stage 2. We ensure varied learning, excellent progression in scientific knowledge, skills and understanding, as well as appropriate challenge.

Scientific enquiry skills are embedded in each topic the children study and these topics are revisited and developed throughout their time at school. Topics, such as Plants, are taught in Key Stage One and studied again in further detail throughout Key Stage Two. This model allows children to build upon their prior knowledge that they bring with them from Key Stage 1 and increases their enthusiasm for the topics whilst embedding this procedural knowledge into the long-term memory so that children know more and remember more.

Curiousity is enhanced through the use of concept cartoons

At Studley St Mary’s Academy, we provide pupils with key scientific knowledge and skills to allow children to access and understand the world around them: our curriculum ensures children are ambitious and prepared for school years/later life. Due to our spiral curriculum, topics and knowledge are regularly revisited and built upon. We also promote curiosity by presenting questions that will encourage the children to 'ponder' and 'wonder'; pupils are always given opportunities to share their ideas (articulate) but also challenge them with further questions. Moreover, at Studley, we understand that the skills learnt in Science are utilised beyond the subject; when completing experiments, they plan, predict, investigate, record results and form conclusions.
