Art

Studley St Mary's Art curriculum is designed to enable children make connections between the work of artists, architects and designers and their own work. The curriculum provides meaningful opportunities for self-expression to give children the space to learn who they are as an artist by exploring different mediums. We aim to ignite children’s love for art by giving them the ability to express themselves through drawing, painting, sculpture and printing. The curriculum also provides extensive opportunity for children to develop their skills in visual literacy by looking at, thinking and talking about art.

All of the children work on portraits during the Autumn term. This spiral curriculum helps then to see the progress that they are making each year in both conceptual progression of line shape and form and media progression in the materials that they use. They are exposed to a wide range of portraits and styles. The Autumn term culminates in a portrait gallery for parents to attend.

The Spring term is focused on painting and the theme of 'The environment'. Again the children are exposed to a wide range of artists and styles, developing their disciplinary knowledge alongside their conceptual understanding. The Summer term is focused on sculpture and allowing the children 's imaginations to 'Run Wild'

The curriculum is further enhanced with 'Art Days' to give children the opportunity to experience working with different mediums such as collage, photography and textiles.

The aims of the national curriculum are covered by the carefully planned and sequenced curriculum and the children report a real passion for the subject.
