Year 3/4
Welcome to Year 3 and 4!
Year 3/4 has approximately 90 pupils split over three classes - Wrens, Robins and Woodpeckers. Children work within their mixed ability Year 3 and Year 4 classes for all core subjects and come together as mixed Year 3/4 for other curriculum areas, with additional support being provided by a HLTA across the class groups where this is needed.
In Year 3 children use exciting texts such as The True Story of The Three Little Pigs and Claude. In Year 4 we use Alice In Wonderland and Firebird to develop a love of reading and give purpose for writing. The children learn key writing skills by being immersed in high quality texts and reading together a wide range of examples to gather ideas and inspiration. They then go on to analyse texts, developing an understanding of the language and layout features that an author has chosen, before they go on to compose their own piece of writing through guided and modelled instruction.
Children are taught maths using a range of learning tools e.g. Concrete Apparatus (such as Dienes, place value counters and hundred squares), before these are linked to pictorial representations (e.g. Bar Models and Number Lines) and then finally abstract number sentences. All units of work contain work on fluency, reasoning and problem solving which stretch and support all pupils.
